NR Electric’s 252kV metal-enclosed fast-switching Fault Current Limiter has been successfully put into operation

On July 4, 2026, the 252kV metal-enclosed fast-switch fault current limiter developed by NR Electric achieved successful one-time live-line commissioning and was officially put into operation at the Anwara 590 MW Combined Cycle Power Plant project in Bangladesh.

The Anwara 590 MW Combined Cycle Power Plant Project is located in the Anwara area near Chattogram, Bangladesh. The construction of the plant will greatly ease the local power shortage, and  serve as a major backbone power source for Bangladesh’s local power grid.

However, grid connection of the plant will lead to excessive short-circuit current in the local power grid, creating a practical bottleneck that hinders the integration of newly-built power supplies.

In response to the plant’s urgent demand for early grid connection and power generation, NR Electric provided full-process support covering site selection & capacity determination, short-circuit simulation, equipment selection and on-site commissioning, and delivered Fault Current Limiter solution. It ultimately helped the power plant pass the technical review of Bangladesh Power Development Board smoothly, removing the final obstacles to grid integration.

This 252kV metal-enclosed fast-switch fault current limiter with an appearance identical to conventional switches. It enables easy routine inspection, operation and maintenance, making advanced technologies highly practical for on-site use.

After the equipment is put into operation, the short-circuit current at the power plant grid connection point is effectively restrained, and the system safety margin is significantly improved. This project has also set a successful example to address the common problem of year-on-year rising short-circuit current in high-voltage power grids.

NR Electric has developed a full range of fast-switching fault current limiters ranging from 10kV to 500kV. Numerous completed projects, successful commissioning operations and reliable functional performances are building a practical new power grid safety system featuring wide coverage, rapid response and convenient operation and maintenance.
