The world's largest grid- forming STATCOM project has been put into operation in Hunan China

On May 7, the 66kV grid-forming STATCOM project, designed and developed by NR Electric, completed all testing procedures and was successfully commissioned at the Yuntian 500kV substation in Hunan China. With a rated capacity of 150 Mvar and a transient capacity of 450 Mvar. This project is currently the world’s largest grid-forming STATCOM project.

As a key component of the new generation power system, grid-forming STATCOM is essential for addressing voltage fluctuations caused by renewable energy grid integration and enhancing the grid’s transient support capability. NR Electric provides a fully integrated, in-house developed end-to-end solution for this project, covering a complete set of critical equipment including converter valves, control and protection systems, water-cooling systems, optical current transformers. To ensure equipment reliability under extreme operating conditions, the team conducted a comprehensive series of rigorous tests, including unit routine tests, full-unit dynamic model tests, and type tests, thereby guaranteeing product quality at the source. On May 7, the system successfully passed the 500kV high-voltage side artificial short-circuit test on the first attempt, achieving a 3-times current support capability during the fault, thereby validating the outstanding performance of NR Electric’s grid-forming STATCOM.

The successful commissioning of the project will effectively improve voltage stability in the Hunan power grid, reduce the need to start up conventional power units, and significantly enhance Hunan’s capacity to absorb green electricity.

With the successful completion of this project, NR Electric has once again demonstrated its leading position in the field of grid-forming power electronics equipment. NR Electric will continue to focus on technological innovation and contribute even more to the development of a safe, efficient, and green new-generation power system.
