IEC TC22/SC22F/WG53 “Grid-forming Energy Storage Systems (GFM ESS) in HV AC systems” - The kick-off Meeting Successfully Held

First Online WG meeting of IEC TC22/SC22F/WG53, “Grid-forming Energy Storage Systems (GFM ESS) in HV AC systems”, was successfully convened on April 28, 2026. Ms. Suzanne Yap, Secretary of IEC TC22/SC22F, sent her warm welcome massage, on behalf of Mr. Yantao Lou, Chairman of IEC TC22/SC22F, Dr. Baoliang Sheng, Deputy Secretary and herself, to the establishment of WG53 team.

Initiated by NR Electric, IEC TC22/SC22F/WG53 is led by Dr. Changjiang Zhan as the Convenor. It currently comprises 25 renowned international experts from 10 countries. As the first official working group on grid-forming technology standards under IEC TC22/SC22F, and also the first IEC working group dedicated to the grid-forming energy storage systems for high-voltage AC power grids, WG53 will focus on terminology/definition, functional requirements, system design, performance specifications, modeling and simulation, testing and verification, as well as operation and maintenance of grid-forming energy storage systems and equipment in high-voltage AC system. The scope covers grid-forming battery energy storage systems (BESS), grid-forming STATCOM, static synchronous condenser (SSC)/E-STATCOM, and other future grid-forming equipment & installations. WG53 will lead the formulation of a unified IEC standard system for grid-forming energy storage systems (GFM ESS) in HV AC systems, providing a solid reference for subsequent standard development and publication under IEC TC22/SC22F.

To address grid challenges brought by the large-scale integration of high-proportion renewable energy into electric power systems, NR Electric has developed the NR-ISGrid Grid-forming solution with featuring full-process voltage-source characteristics and inherently natural response. The solution is capable of independently establishing a power grid, coordinating operation with multiple types of power supply resources, and supporting the smooth transition from a traditional power system to a renewable energy dominated power system.

NR Electric has taken the lead in developing a full range of NR-ISGrid grid-forming equipment, including grid-forming energy storage, static synchronous condensers, grid-forming STATCOM and grid-forming VSC-HVDC. To date, NR has delivered over 170 grid-forming projects worldwide, with a total installed capacity exceeding 20 GW.

Moving forward, NR Electric will continue together with international communities to contribute to the development of relevant IEC grid-forming standards, promote greater contributions to the construction of the new power system in the future.
