Off-grid all-type short-circuit test successfully completed at the grid-forming energy storage power station in Inner Mongolia

On March 8, 2026, the 135 MW/540 MWh grid-forming energy storage project in Baotou Aluminum, Inner Mongolia, for which NR Electric provided a complete set of solution, successfully completed all types of manual short-circuit tests in off-grid conditions. Following the completion of 21 comprehensive grid-forming functionality tests, 11 black start tests, and medium to long term off-grid disturbance tests at the end of 2025, all grid-forming tests for this project have now been successfully concluded. The tests fully validated the comprehensive capabilities of NR Electric’s grid-forming energy storage technology in effectively improving the short-circuit ratio at renewable energy stations and grid connection points, promoting the integration of renewable energy, and enhancing grid stability.

As the supporting energy storage system for the 1,200MW renewable energy project in Inner Mongolia, this power station adopted a complete grid-forming solution from NR Electric. The solution aims to address the issue of low short-circuit ratio in areas with large-scale renewable energy grid integration, which makes it difficult to meet safety and stability requirements. It also verified the engineering effectiveness of grid-forming energy storage as a replacement for traditional synchronous condenser. This test marked the first time that off-grid extreme condition testing was conducted. With the grid-forming energy storage system serving as the system’s sole power source and operating at full capacity, a full range of fault ride-through tests were performed at the system’s output, including three-phase and phase-to-phase short circuits, as well as single-phase and phase-to-ground short circuits. The tests fully validated the outstanding performance of NR Electric's grid-forming energy storage throughout the entire fault process, which are consistent voltage source characteristics throughout the event, instantaneous natural current response during short circuits, no disconnection from the grid, and millisecond-level active voltage restoration upon fault clearance, rapidly restoring stable system operation.

All-Type Short-Circuit Test

As a global leader in grid-forming technology, NR Electric has pioneered the concept of creating an ideal synchronous power source based on energy storage, providing a systematic solution (NR-ISGrid) to support the smooth transition from traditional power systems to new-generation power systems. The successful completion of the full suite of grid-connected tests for the grid-forming energy storage project once again validates the value of the grid-forming technology. NR Electric will be committed to building a safer, greener, and more economical new power system.
