The off-grid artificial short-circuit test of 100-megawatt grid-forming energy storage was a complete success

On December 4, 2024, the chief director of the site of China Energy Group Ningdong Shuguang 100MW/200MWh energy storage station announced: “The world's first 100MW-level grid-forming energy storage black start and artificial short-circuit test was a complete success”, and grid-forming energy storage has entered the 100MW-level era.

Ningdong Shuguang 100MW/200MWh energy storage station using NR Electric grid-forming solutions, consisting of hundreds of PCS, designed to solve the large-scale renewable energy short-circuit ratio is insufficient, wide-frequency oscillation and transient over-voltage and other issues. In order to confirm the hundreds of grid-forming energy storage PCSs in the system failure whole process with  the overall “synchronous power” characteristics, in the grid-forming energy storage as the only support for the power supply of the entire off-grid scenarios to carry out the black start, the near-end of the artificial short-circuit and other rigorous tests. Hundreds of grid-forming PCSs have successfully realized second-level synchronous black start, output three times short-circuit current without delay during fault, and loop current of multiple branches less than 1%, and millisecond-level voltage recovery after fault.
